Elimu Dada - Educating Underage Moms
Goal
Creating a more equitable society where every teen mother has the opportunity to thrive.
The Challenge
Teenage mothers in Kenya face layered and compounding barriers: interrupted education, stigma, financial instability, lack of childcare, weak enforcement of school re-entry policies, and limited economic opportunity. Without intervention, these challenges often lock young mothers into cycles of poverty that extend to their children.
Education is a fundamental right and a powerful equalizer. Yet early pregnancy often forces young women out of school, limiting their independence and long-term stability. Many experience discrimination, social isolation, and overwhelming financial responsibility — especially those raising children alone.
Although re-entry policies exist, implementation remains inconsistent. Some young mothers are unaware of their rights. Others face stigma within schools or struggle to balance education with caregiving responsibilities. Without childcare and practical household support, returning to school becomes nearly impossible.
Our Response
Elimu Dada provides a holistic, community-centered pathway back to education, stability, and long-term independence. We address not only school access, but also the emotional, economic, and social barriers that prevent young mothers from thriving.
Our Program Model
We support teen and young single mothers through five integrated pillars designed to create lasting, generational impact.
📚 Education Re-Entry & Retention
We remove financial and institutional barriers that prevent young mothers from returning to school.
School re-enrollment support through partnerships with secondary schools and vocational institutions
Advocacy to strengthen enforcement of re-entry policies and promote safe, inclusive school environments
Payment of school fees, uniforms, and essential learning materials
Digital literacy training to prepare participants for a modern workforce
Career guidance aligned with long-term goals

We provide:
Safe, affordable childcare through partnerships with local daycare centers
Support for essential utilities and basic household upkeep
Parenting education focused on maternal health and child development
Flexible support structures that allow mothers to balance school and caregiving
When the home environment is stable, education becomes sustainable.
🧠 Psychosocial & Mental Health Support
Teenage motherhood often carries stigma, trauma, and isolation.
We provide:
Professional counseling and trauma-informed therapy
Peer support groups that build community and resilience
Life skills workshops in leadership, confidence, decision-making, and time management
Safe spaces for healing and growth
Emotional strength is foundational to long-term success.
🤝 Family & Community Engagement
Sustainable change requires shifting the environment around young mothers.
We facilitate:
Caregiver workshops that include fathers and extended family
Dialogue sessions with schools and community leaders
Stigma reduction and awareness campaigns
Engagement with local and county government to strengthen policy implementation
When communities become supportive rather than judgmental, young mothers are more likely to succeed.
Future Goals?
The Elimu Dada Project is committed to continuous growth and expansion to reach more young mothers in need. Key future goals include:
Promote Income-Generating Activities – Establish a training center where young mothers can develop practical skills in areas such as producing reusable sanitary pads, jewelry making, tailoring, catering, agribusiness, and digital entrepreneurship, empowering them to generate income and achieve financial independence.
Expand Reach – Scale services to additional counties, supporting more young mothers each year.
Enhance Digital Support – Expand Virtual Peer Support Group initiatives to provide remote learning, mentorship, and parenting education, ensuring young mothers in underserved areas receive guidance, community connection, and essential resources.
Increase Childcare Access – Partner with additional daycare centers to provide more childcare options for young mothers pursuing education.
