The Kemi-Zola Project

Restoring Dignity, Healing & Hope After Pregnancy & Infant Loss

No parent should grieve alone.
Kemi-Zola exists to provide holistic, compassionate support to parents — especially young mothers — who experience miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss, ensuring they have the emotional, practical, and community resources to heal and rebuild their lives.

The Challenge

In many low-resource settings, women face high rates of miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant mortality due to inadequate prenatal care, poor nutrition, and limited access to quality maternal health services. Adolescent mothers are especially vulnerable. According to the World Health Organization, pregnancy and childbirth complications remain the leading cause of death for girls aged 15–19 globally.

Beyond the medical risks lies a silent crisis — grief.

For young mothers and marginalized women, the trauma of losing a child is often intensified by:

  • Social stigma and blame

  • Limited access to mental health services

  • Financial hardship

  • Isolation and weak support systems

Research from UNICEF highlights that vulnerable women face fewer economic opportunities and reduced psychosocial support, making recovery from loss even more difficult.

In many communities, infant loss is rarely discussed openly. Parents are expected to “move on” without safe spaces to process trauma or honor their child’s memory.

Our Response

Kemi-Zola bridges the gap between grief and healing by providing comprehensive emotional and practical support.

We address not only the trauma of loss, but also the financial, social, and systemic burdens that often follow. In many low-resource settings, women face high rates of miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant mortality due to inadequate prenatal care, poor nutrition, and social stigma. Adolescent girls are especially vulnerable. According to the World Health Organization, pregnancy and childbirth complications remain the leading cause of death for girls aged 15–19 globally.

For adolescent mothers and marginalized women, the loss of a child is often compounded by limited support systems, economic hardship, and societal judgment. Research from UNICEF shows that these women face reduced access to mental health services and increased social isolation, making healing even more difficult.

Recognizing these vulnerabilities, Kemi-Zola provides grief counseling, financial assistance for memorial services, and peer support networks — empowering teen mothers and women to navigate loss with dignity, resilience, and hope.

Our Program Model

Kemi-Zola operates through three integrated pillars:

🧠 Emotional & Mental Health Support

Grief requires compassionate, informed care.

We provide:

  • Individual and group grief counseling led by trained professionals

  • Peer support networks connecting parents who have experienced similar loss

  • Trauma-informed care tailored to adolescent mothers and marginalized women

  • Psychosocial training for caregivers and community health workers to strengthen local support systems

By creating safe spaces for expression and healing, we help parents move forward with resilience.

🤍 Practical & Financial Assistance

Pregnancy and infant loss often come with unexpected financial strain.

We provide:

  • Financial support for memorial and burial expenses

  • Assistance with transportation and basic funeral arrangements

  • Coordination with hospitals and social services to simplify paperwork and administrative processes

Reducing financial and logistical burdens allows families to grieve with dignity rather than distress.

🌍 Community Engagement & Awareness

Healing must extend beyond the individual.

We work to shift community culture through:

  • Advocacy and awareness campaigns that destigmatize miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss

  • Community forums that promote open dialogue around maternal health and bereavement

  • Counselor-supported grief circles in areas with limited access to mental health services

  • Empowerment pathways for participants to become advocates for improved maternal care policies

When communities respond with compassion instead of silence, healing becomes possible.

Impact

Kemi-Zola contributes to:

  • Improved emotional well-being among grieving parents.

  • Increased access to mental health services in underserved areas.

  • Reduced stigma surrounding pregnancy and infant loss.

  • Strengthened community-based support systems.

  • Greater awareness of maternal health risks among adolescent mothers.

  • Empowered women advocating for improved maternal health care.
